The Social Impact of Acne
The negative results of acne
Acne is one of the most troublesome conditions of our times. While most people suffering from acne do not experience any kind of physical discomfort, they make up for this by psychological scarring. This effect has not been studied in depth because acne is a common, non-threatening condition that comes and goes on its own and any psychological effects attached to it were not seen as particularly important.
However, acne has a stronger than suspected impact on the lives of people today. Studies conducted by researchers showed that people suffering from acne also display:
- Low self-confidence
- Frustration
- Feelings of inadequacy
- Depression
- Refusal to socialize
- Low self-esteem
These effects are triggered by the negative effect acne has on looks and the resulting apprehension of negative reactions from others. People suffering from acne can end up living unsatisfying lives and fail in school, jobs and social interaction.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR SKIN IN SUMMER – A Quick Guide
Out in the sun
Everybody wants to lie drowsily in the sun and let the summer rays turn the skin to a healthy and sexy looking dark brown. However, there are some health-related issues you should be aware of before spreading that beach towel. Sun exposure causes skin cancer, the most common type of cancer reported among the residents of the United Kingdom and USA. US authorities report that one in every three new cancer cases is skin cancer.
The sun sends out ultraviolet radiation, most of which is stopped from reaching the Earth’s surface by the ozone layer. The UV radiation that makes it past the ozone layer is strong enough to alter the DNA of skin cells and trigger, in time, the formation of carcinomas and melanomas. UV radiation is also responsible for sunburns and skin ageing.
Children and people with fair or red hair or fair skin, who tend to burn rapidly in the sun, are more at risk than others and may develop skin cancer faster. They should be the first to use sunscreen and other types of protection against UV radiation (wearing long sleeves and hats in summer). Most cases of skin cancer could have been prevented by limiting the exposure to sun.
Many cases actually result from exposure to UV radiation during childhood and the teen years. This means that you should start protecting yourself early on and that parents should teach their children things such as staying out of the sun at midday, wearing protective clothing and putting on sunscreen. Protection is the key to preventing skin cancer. Many people believe that ultraviolet radiation is the strongest when it’s very warm outside, but heat comes from infrared radiation. This means that you should be protected even on cooler days.
UV radiation is at its highest level in summer, around midday, when the sun is high in the sky. If you like mountain climbing, then you should be doubly careful; UV radiation increases with altitude. A heavy cloud cover may block UV radiation, but thin clouds are not good enough for protection. Don’t rely on the fact that you can face the sun safely for half an hour or even an hour. You cannot feel UV radiation on your skin and you will not be able to tell when it’s no longer safe for you to be out in the sun.
More on skin cancer
There are three types of skin cancer, according to the type of tumors that develop on the skin. The most common and less dangerous types feature basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Approximately nine in ten skin cancer cases belong to these two types. The true dangerous type is the malignant melanoma cancer, which can be fatal if not treated early.
Basal cell carcinomas look much like sores and form on the exposed parts of the skin: neck, shoulders, hands, and head. The carcinomas appear as raised, round bumps or flattened lumps of a reddish, pale or pearly colour. The carcinomas may be crusted and bleeding is frequent. Squamous cell carcinoma features persistent red, scaling, thickened spots on the sun-exposed skin. Ulceration and bleeding may occur. The SCC may also grow in size and spread to other parts of your skin if it is not treated.
In order to protect yourself, you should know what symptoms to look for. Most surface skin cancer cases can be treated with surgery if they are identified and brought to a doctor’s attention early on. However, if carcinomas or melanomas are allowed to grow, they will expand into the deeper layers of the skin and will connect with the lymphatic system. They will also metastasize and spread to other parts of the body, which may prove fatal. This is why you should always be careful to check for signs of cancer.
Any newly grown sore or reddish patch of skin that does not heal over a longer period of time (at least one month) is likely to be a carcinoma or melanoma, especially if you notice any bleeding. Any spot that does not stop itching, hurting or bleeding is also likely to be skin cancer. Also look for inflamed moles or moles that start to bleed or crust. Persistent ulceration of the skin that cannot be explained by your activities should also be suspected of being an early sign. If you experience any of the above symptoms, you should go to a doctor as soon as possible. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
The worst type of skin cancer lesions are malignant melanomas. Melanomas look like moles, but grow to be bigger than any other moles you have ever seen. They develop in the outer layer of the skin, but can spread to other parts of the body and may be fatal if left untreated. You should see a doctor if you notice that one or more existing moles are growing in size. Melanomas also have a ragged outline, which is significantly different from the round and regular shape of common moles.
Stay safe
Knowledge is power. The more you know about skin cancer and its roots, the better you can protect yourself. Here are a few simple tips designed to help you in your quest to never experience skin cancer as long as you live.
As stated above, avoid the sun when it’s high in the sky. This means that you should stay indoors, or at least in the shade, between 11 AM and, say, 3 PM. After 3 PM it should be safe enough to venture outside. Still, you should always take advantage of shade, wherever you find it. Buy yourself a pair of UV protection glasses, if you don’t have one already. Wear a wide-brimmed hat if you can’t cover your neck by some other means. Make sure the exposed parts of your body never get burnt; you may want to invest in a sunscreen solution with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher to cover your hands and, if need be, feet. Use comfortable clothing that actually covers your body.
Keep in mind that no sunscreen solution is 100 percent safe, so cover as much of your skin as possible. Be extra careful with babies and children. Their skin needs much more protection than that of adults. Avoid sunbeds and tanning lamps. Such devices simply negate any effort to protect yourself from exposure to UV radiation. And lastly, check you skin on a regular basis and see your doctor if you notice any unexplained changes.
Tips on sunscreens
If you are willing to spend some money on a sunscreen, you should at least make sure you buy something worth your cash. The first thing to look for is the phrase “broad spectrum”. This means that the product can protect you from UV radiation of both type A and B. The second thing to look for is the Sun Protection Factor; the higher, the better. Buy products with SPFs of at least 15 to make sure you are well protected. If you are planning a trip to the beach, then you may also want a sunscreen marked “water resistant”, which is less likely to wash off in fifteen minutes. Remember that high SPF levels do not mean that you can stay in the sun longer. You will simply be better protected.

SUMMER SKIN RASHES

SUMMER SKIN RASHES
Everybody loves to stay out under the warm and pleasant rays of the summer sun and in the midst of nature, but this is not always wise. Too much exposure to sun rays and nature may cause skin rashes. Although many people believe that rashes are simply allergic reactions, this is simply not true.
The most common type of summer skin rash is the Sun Rash. Small reddish blisters appear on those parts of the skin that have been exposed to the sun for too long. This type of rash is mostly confined to people whose skins are very sensitive and cannot stand harsh sunlight for long.
The second most common type is Miliaria, or Prickly Heat. This type of rash is caused by exposure to high heat and humidity which obstruct the ducts of sweat glands located in the skin and triggers the eruption of small, red papules, accompanied by a prickling sensation.
Rashes may also be caused by chemical agents, such as the substances contained by cosmetics or drugs. Photoallergic Dermatitis is a type of rash caused by the reaction of chemicals found in makeup, perfumes, soaps or suntan lotions to prolonged sun exposure. Drug-Induced Photosensitivity is the scientific term for rashes experienced by people who take blood pressure medicine, certain antibiotics and anti-acne products, Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, birth control pills and antihistamines.
Ever heard of the Poison Oak? I bet you have. This means you know that some plants can cause rashes and other skin problems. You would do well to stay away from Poison Sumac, Daffodils, Hyacinths, Primrose, Ivy, Stinging Nettles and Pencil Trees.
The best way to treat rashes is leave them alone. Once you are no longer exposed to the sun or to the toxic substances of plants, the rash will go away on its own. Above all, avoid scratching. Mild rashes go away in a couple of hours, but scratching is almost guaranteed to trigger an infection. If the rash is accompanied by fever or by unbearable itching, pay a visit to your doctor at once.

Finding your skin type

Finding your skin type
Knowing what type of skin you have is important for your health care. Your protection depends on accurate information, which is the basis of correct decisions. Skin type determines which makeup, sunscreen and soap you can use and how much you need to help your biggest organ. Environmental factors such as pollution, UV radiation and chemicals damage your skin and block its normal functions.
Normal Skin: This is considered the standard type of skin that we all should have. Normal skin is soft, elastic and firm to the touch. The pores are small to medium in size. It needs no special care, unless exposed to hazardous environment factors.
Oily Skin: Nothing says I’m a teenager better than oily skin and pimples. This type of skin has a shiny look and is firmer than normal skin. Pores are larger and more visible and pimples are far more likely to appear, due to the excess oil produced by glands.
Dry Skin: Firmer than normal skin, but not as elastic. Dry skin is a lot less likely to develop pimples because the secretion of oil is lower than normal. However, the drawback is that dry skin wrinkles sooner. Keep in mind that dry skin can be caused by certain factors. If your skin type is not dry, but you do feel your skin is tight (especially facial skin) and lacking in moisture, then try to identify the source of this change. Soaps, certain types of heating, prolonged exposure to wind, insufficient water consumption and certain disorders can dry your skin.
Sensitive Skin: If you burn easily in the sun and wind, if cosmetics have always given you rashes and if your skin is irritated by almost anything, then it belongs to the sensitive type. You are far more prone to experience the adverse effects of exposure to the environment than other people.
Combination Skin: This is the strangest type of skin. Combination Skin means that different parts of the same person’s skin belong to different types. A common pattern for CS is the “T-Zone”, where the forehead, nose and chin form a “T”-shaped zone of oily skin, while the cheeks are normal or dry.
And since we’ve been discussing skin issues, let me throw in a couple of skin care pointers. As many of you know, the best skin care products are based on Aloe Vera. This plant has been used since the ancient times and its beneficial effects are well-documented. Herbalists have discovered a long time ago that the juice of fresh Aloe Vera can easily soothe and cure burns and other skin lesions. The high number of minerals, vitamins and amino acids contained by the plant makes it perfect for treating various skin issues.
Aloe Vera is, of course, the darling of the skin care market. Well-known skin care products and systems contain generous amounts of Aloe Vera juice. The ClearPores System, for instance, uses the powerful Salicylic Acid to clear acne and Aloe Vera to soothe the skin, help it close the distended pores and heal the lesions. The System is designed to take full advantage of the plant’s healing properties and treat acne. This is just one example, albeit a very good one, of the many uses of Aloe Vera.

Home remedies for acne – are they worth it

Home remedies for acne – are they worth it
The bigger a problem is, the more people are going to look for a solution. This improvised saying is an accurate description of the host of remedies, cures and treatments for acne available on the market today. From exfoliation and the classic antibiotics and bactericidals and on to hormonal treatments, retinoids, phototherapy and laser, the list is very long. The average customer looking for a cure to his or her acne problem is likely to be confused by this cornucopia of treatments, all of which are 100% guaranteed to put an end to acne once and for all.
One of the new additions to the overall effort is the idea of treating acne with a combination of healthy food and vitamins. Although the use of certain foods to cure various conditions is by no means a new idea, the concept that food alone could be used to cure acne is an interesting new twist. The cornerstone of this approach is the attempt to avoid treated food, fat and sugar in order to focus on fresh vegetables, fruits and water. The underlying assumption is that heavily processed food and fat-rich food are bad for the body and the source of acne and other conditions. Skin problems are considered to be a side effect of processed food consumption
However, things are not that simple. This approach is a good idea only for the people whose acne outbreaks are caused or worsened by hormones and other substances found in red meat and processed food. It would be hard to argue that all the various types of acne have only one source and that source is nothing else but food. Moreover, people respond in different ways to different foods. Banning one type of food may work for some people, but not for others. A healthy diet is good for everybody, but it simply can’t cure acne on its own, especially the severe cases. What the skin needs is a product that clears pores and kills bacteria, thus preventing hair follicles from clogging and turning into pimples. This is what you should be looking for if you want to get rid of those ugly pimples.

Alternative acne treatments – a review

Alternative acne treatments – a review
The high percentage of people suffering from acne all over the world has led in recent times to an increase in the number of treatment alternatives available to people suffering from this condition. The classic antibiotics and creams have been supplemented by hormonal treatments, phototherapy and laser surgery. Others are trying to develop still more types of cures, such as diets built to avoid the consumption of dairy products, the use of chromium and zinc supplements and home made cures from various sorts of spices. Many of them haven’t been scientifically proven yet.
Laser surgery is the latest technique developed by doctors to reduce the scars left behind by acne. Doctors use laser beams to burn out scar tissue, which allows the skin to generate new, healthy tissue instead. This technique is still in the early, primitive stages since it is used after follicles had turned to pimples and pimples were reduced to scars.
Still, new research shows that laser surgery could be used in the future to prevent acne from even happening, instead of just dealing with the consequences. Medical grade laser may soon be used to burn away the follicle sac where the hair grows or to burn the sebaceous gland in those parts of the skin that were subject to acne outbreaks again and again. Another approach currently being studied is the use of laser to induce the formation of oxygen in the bacteria in order to kill them. However, at this time, laser is still too dangerous for acne prevention since the extreme heat is known to cause long-term dryness of the skin and even spots.
Other research efforts focus on whole-genome DNA sequencing as a tool for identifying the genetic reasons why some people do not suffer from acne or develop only light forms of this condition. However, gene sequencing is still one of those techniques that belong to the future and are unlikely to become available soon.

Stay clean – a few simple rules for clean face skin

Stay clean – a few simple rules for clean face skin
One of the easiest ways to prevent, to a certain extent, the emergence of pimples and the spread of acne is to keep your skin clean. While the hormonal causes of this condition cannot be addressed by simple washing, you can still prevent excess sebum from clogging pores and grime and bacteria from accumulating into them. Thus, at the cost of a couple of minutes every day, you can actually stop acne from running wild and popping up everywhere it feels like. However, there are certain simple rules one must follow in order to make washing an effective tool against acne.
The first rule is to avoid using hot or cold water on your face. Facial skin is one of the most sensitive parts of your skin and should never be washed with anything else than lukewarm water. Hot water will burn the outer layers and cause the pores to open up too much, thereby exposing yourself to even more danger. Cold water, on the other hand will force the pores to contract and you will no longer be able to clean them, thus defeating the purpose of washing. Neither scalding your face nor freezing it is recommended. Lukewarm water is gentle on your skin and more effective at removing sebum and grime than hot or cold water.
The second rule is to avoid the use of soap or other cleansing chemicals. Soap will disrupt the natural balance of facial skin by removing too much sebum and leaving the skin dry and unprotected. It will also leave behind a film of substance that can easily clog the pores and cause the acne you are trying to avoid. Other chemicals, such as creams and ointments, will usually dry out your skin and cause redness and swelling in time. Avoid them like plague. Plain water is enough for keeping your facial skin clean.
After washing, you should pad your face with a soft towel. As you may have noticed, the basic idea is to be gentle to your face skin at all times. A harsh toweling would only serve to open a thousand tiny lesions in your facial skin, all of which can turn into entry points for bacteria and germs. Needless to say that you don’t want this to happen. Be gentle with your skin and you’ll enjoy beautiful and wrinkle-free skin even in your old age.

Keeping your skin free from acne scars

Keeping your skin free from acne scars
Many people suffering from acne are familiar with the problem of acne scars. While acne is enough of a problem on its own, the issue of more or less permanent scars makes everything even more complicated. Pimples are a tempting target for squeezing or picking open in what may be seen as a futile attempt to get rid of them. However, squeezing and picking is exactly what you should refrain from doing because it will only make everything worse.
I know that you heard this advice a million times, but do try to keep your hands away fro your face. For one thing, your hands have a lot of germs and bacteria, mainly because the hands are the most exposed part of the body, the limbs with which you grab and use all manner of not very clean objects. This means that bringing your hands in contact with your face skin is guaranteed to transfer a load of germs and bacteria from the hand to the face. Worse, all these germs and bacteria are transferred exactly in the area where your squeezing is opening a breach in the skin. In other words, you are bringing the enemy right to the gate.
Depending on the type of acne you are suffering from and on your face skin type, pimples that have been picked or squeezed open can turn to scars, leaving an unpleasantly looking skin behind. While squeezing pimples is not a good idea, but tolerable within certain bounds, you should absolutely refrain from trying to remove scars yourself. This is definitely a job for a trained physician who uses the right tools for the job. Tampering with scars will make matters worse. If you feel you cannot live with them, then make an appointment with a dermatologist and have them removed.
Alternatively, you could try to buy an acne treatment in order to keep your skin clear and prevent pimples from even forming. The best anti-acne system around is the ClearPores system. Featuring deep facial and body washes, herbal pills and a protection cream, ClearPores makes sure your pores are clean of grime and sebum and that bacteria don’t get the chance to start multiplying in a clogged sebaceous follicle. This system is the absolute best at stopping acne from being a problem.

How hormones affect zits and skin

How hormones affect zits and skin
Implicated in a wide range of conditions and illnesses, hormones also play a role in the development of acne - inflammation of the skin that causes blackheads, whiteheads, and red spots usually called “pimples” or “zits.” Androgens, hormones that are secreted in different amounts by both men and women, play a huge role in most cases of acne. Androgens stimulate the hormone-sensitive sebaceous glands, which produce oil known as sebum. Sebum, in turn, has been labeled as “the fuel that feeds the flame of acne.”
Teens are more likely to suffer from breakouts because at the onset of puberty, their bodies begin to produce androgens. These “male” hormones are a natural part of development for both boys and girls, but boys tend to produce more of them, resulting in more severe breakouts. After about age 20, sebum production begins to decrease but it can flare up again at any age.
Due to the presence of androgens, your oil glands go into overdrive. They produce extra oil, which block your follicles and clump together with the dead skin cells on the top layer of your skin. When this sticky mixture works its way into your pores, it acts just like a cork in a bottle — trapping oil and bacteria inside. Unfortunately, your oil glands cannot determine when to stop so they keep producing oil thus making the follicle swollen. Your body’s natural defense system — white blood cells — rush to the area to produce an enzyme that damages the wall of the follicle, allowing the contents of the follicle to enter the dermis. This process causes an inflammatory response that results in either red, painful bumps (papules); blackheads and whiteheads (comedones); pimples or acne. Contrary to common belief, this condition has nothing to do with what you eat, or how often you wash your face.
Dermatologists point out that dietary factors neither cause nor cure acne. In almost all cases, the food you eat has almost nothing to do with your acne, except for those containing iodine and muscle-enhancing steroids. If you ingest a large amount of iodine like mineral pills, your acne will likely flare up. Steroids have also been known to cause a type of acne referred to as steroid acne.
Hormones affect acne but having acne is not a sign of a hormonal imbalance. Changes in hormones, such as the specific point in your menstrual cycle (ovulation vs. having your period), pregnancy, or menopause all are normal, yet all can cause dramatic changes in your skin condition.
Female hormone levels change and vary throughout the monthly cycle. These fluctuations do cause acne to flare and diminish depending on the time of the month. The most effective way to treat menstrual cycle acne is to treat the acne itself by applying topical medications, oral antibiotics, or even changing or adjusting a birth control pill since the hormones found in these contraceptives are also related to flare-ups of acne.
Several symptoms can help your dermatologist identify hormonally-influenced acne: adult-onset acne, or breakouts that appear for the first time in adults; acne flare-ups preceding the menstrual cycle; a history of irregular menstrual cycles, increased facial oiliness; Hirsutism (excessive growth of hair, or hair in unusual places); and elevated levels of certain androgens in the blood stream.

Facial care, skin care, and types of soap to use
December 2, 2009 by admin
Facial care, skin care, and types of soap to use
Dermatologists recommend washing the face with soap twice daily, the body once daily - and the hands as often as necessary to keep them sanitary. How do you know which soap is right for you? Soap used to have a bad reputation because of the inclusion of harsh detergents, which stripped oil from the skin. However, that is no longer the case with all soaps anymore.
Before we discuss what skincare routine to follow, you need to know your skin type. To do so, look at your face in a mirror in natural daylight (i.e., outside or near a window) and observe the various areas of your face. In general: Oily skin is shiny - especially along the T-zone (the forehead, nose and chin areas), where oil glands are most prevalent - and tends to break out with pimples. If you have large pores, these may also indicate oiliness. Dry skin feels tight and dehydrated and pores may be very fine. It may also look flaky, and has a rough, papery texture. Normal skin has a uniform texture and tone that only occasionally break out in spots. Combination skin has oily and dry patches: It may be shiny/blemished along the T-zone and scaly around the cheeks.
Once you have determined your skin type, you use this information to pay attention to your specific skincare needs.
If your skin is oily and/or acne-prone, select soaps that contain salicylic acid — a skin-sloughing beta hydroxy acid that keeps pores unclogged. Similarly, choose products with the pimple-drying ingredient benzoyl peroxide.
For dry skin, stick with gentle, super-fatted soaps, many of which contain up to one-third moisturizers. Pure glycerin soap will also help your skin retain moisture. However, avoid deodorant soaps, which can dry your skin even further.
Those with sensitive skin should opt for hypoallergenic soaps, and avoid perfumed, antibacterial and deodorant soaps, which can be irritating. Try to use very little soap, do not scrub too hard, and make sure to rinse well with cool water (warm or hot water can be drying).
People with normal skin have plenty of options: feed your skin with plant-based soaps, lather up with triple-milled soaps or use a gentle face bar soap that is non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores).
Those suffering from windburned, sunburned or chapped skin can calm it with soap rich in soothing glycerin and aloe vera. As much as possible, avoid bars with overpowering fragrances since they can irritate the skin further.
Even when you’re partying until the wee hours of the morning or pulling overtime at the office, it’s essential to cleanse your face thoroughly before you hit the sack. Ideally, you should wash your face twice a day, put on toner, and moisturize immediately after cleansing your face. By removing makeup and daily grime from your face daily, you can avoid clogged pores and breakouts. However, we don’t live in a perfect world and there will be times when you just want to slip into your bed and forget about your beauty ritual.
When you’re too tired or there isn’t that much time to conduct your full facial regimen, you can save time and effort by using a multipurpose cleanser that’ll strip away dirt, oil, and even hard-to-remove makeup like waterproof mascara all at once. You can also try using disposable cloths that you simply moisten (to activate the built-in cleanser) and smooth over your face to lift away the day’s dirt.
There are plenty of ways to protect and beautify your face, and establishing a regular beauty regimen is one of them. Start one today and your skin will thank you for it.
